Most parents don’t have subject background or state mandate knowledge. As a math teacher, I can see a scenario where parents want a math curriculum from the past, that was good enough for them, when they grew up. I can see many communities, especially small and/or rural communities having curriculum committees in which the nonteacher members are people who have far right political beliefs, like the Freedom Foundation, who fight a curriculum that has anything that is contrary to their political beliefs, like climate change or diversity. Such a group gained control of the Board of Trustees, for North Idaho College. When they imposed their extremist political views, the college almost lost its accreditation.
